The Republican Socialist Platform’s 2025 AGM took place on Saturday 23rd August 2025, with members taking part in-person from Glasgow’s Renfield Centre and via Zoom.
It began with a discussion about “Scotland, the left and the 2026 elections” which included critical assessments of the Your Party initiative launched by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana as well as the new independence strategy proposed by SNP leader John Swinney.
This included extensive discussion of our joint work in the newly-established Platform for Socialism and Independence (PSI) and in the long-standing Radical Independence Campaign (RIC).
We also discussed the rise of racism and the far-right, including the significant amount of electoral support which Nigel Farage’s Reform UK has developed in Scotland.
After our discussion, members heard reports on the RSP’s finances, membership and recent activity, in particular the continued success of our online magazine, Heckle, which has a small but growing audience.
Five motions were proposed by members and all were passed, in some cases following amendments. The full text of the motions, as approved at the AGM, can be found below.
RSP members also agreed to co-sign a joint statement on Cornish nationhood following a request from our comrades in Wales/Cymru and Cornwall/Kernow.
Motions passed
Following a decision taken at the AGM, the RSP will from now on publish in full the text of motions agreed by RSP members. The following motions were passed at the 2025 AGM.
Motion #1
The RSP should continue to discuss developments around the Corbyn/Sultana initiative.
The RSP welcomes the establishment of the Platform for Socialism and Independence (PSI) as a means of engaging with the Corbyn/Sultana initiative from a pro-independence Scottish left perspective.
The RSP encourages its members to take part in PSI meetings and activity.
The RSP seeks to persuade the PSI and any new left party in Scotland that an independent Scottish republic is a necessary step towards the socialist transformation of these islands.
The RSP acknowledges that its members belong to various political parties and none.
The RSP resolves that it will not endorse or pursue affiliation to any particular political party without a full ballot of its membership.
Motion #2
The RSP should consider strengthening its relationship with immigrant communities, refugees and ethnic minorities via offering concrete solidarity.
Motion #3
The RSP should reflect on its relationship with RIC.
Motion #4
This AGM recognises that:
- the Republican Socialist Platform has been unable at recent AGMs to fill most of the office-bearer roles set out in the RSP constitution;
- many of our current members have limited time and energy and may feel wary of taking on executive roles with significant responsibility;
- the Heckle editorial board, as a committee with a small number of ordinary members who share tasks between themselves, has functioned comparatively well.
This being the case, this AGM considers that the RSP would benefit from establishing an organising committee with shared responsibility for organisational tasks in lieu of the existing large number of executive roles.
This AGM therefore resolves to replace the entirety of section 5 of the RSP constitution with the following:
5. Organising Committee
5.1. There shall be an Organising Committee of up to five members with shared responsibility for the administration of the RSP.
5.2. The Organising Committee shall be elected annually by means of a full membership ballot. Where vacancies arise, further ballots may take place to fill them.
5.3. The Organising Committee shall be required to elect a Treasurer from its membership. Additional members of the Organising Committee may also be designated as signatories to RSP bank accounts.
5.4. The Organising Committee shall ensure that its actions reflect the political views of the RSP membership and involve an appropriate level of democratic consultation.
5.5. An RSP meeting may agree to suspend any member(s) of the Organising Committee pending a full membership ballot on their removal or reinstatement.
This AGM further resolves to amend section 6 of the RSP constitution as follows:
In 6.3, replace “Secretary and Treasurer” with “Organising Committee”.
Delete 6.4.
In 6.8 and 6.9, replace “Secretary” with “Organising Committee”.
Motion #5
This AGM resolves that all motions passed by members of the Republican Socialist Platform should from now on be published in full in a dedicated section of the RSP website. Minimal redactions may be made where agreed by the author(s) of the motion.
